Before You Buy
Before You Contract for Painting in Denver, Fort Collins and the Front Range – What You Should Ask
The telephone book is full of painting contractors who offer residential and commercial painting in Denver and other Front Range cities. Before you make a decision on who to use, think about the answers to these questions to ensure your final choice is the best one for painting in Denver and Front Range cities:
- Is the contractor insured? Ask to see proof of liability insurance and make sure certificates are authentic and current to allow safe painting in Denver and the Front Range.
- Is the contractor someone you can work with? Make sure you are comfortable with the contractor or supervisor who will be in charge of your project. Talk to him or her during the free painting estimate to make sure you have confidence in the person and the company.
- Does the contractor provide test patches? It is very hard to envision what a new color will look like on your house after only looking at a tiny square of color. The contractor should take the time to paint test patches of the actual colors you are considering so you can see what they look like in the sun, in the shade, and alongside the other colors you are considering.
- Will the contractor do daily inspections? Whether the company is painting in Denver or other Front Range cities, the contractor should be available to walk around your job with you every day to show you the progress and the quality of the work.
- Does the contractor provide a warranty? Warranties may not be as important as the quality of the workmanship and materials and the reliability of the company, but the contractor should be able to provide you with a written warranty from their company.
- Is the company established? Ideally, the company has been painting in Denver or the Front Range for more than a year or two. Since more than 98% of small businesses go under before the 5-year mark, your goal is to work with someone who will still be around to take care of any problems in workmanship or materials should they arise. After all, a warranty is only good as long as the company providing it.
- Will quality materials be used on your project? The contractor should explain to you the specific brand and grade of paint being used, the reasoning for using those, and any other options available.
- Will the company provide referrals? The contractor should be able and willing to provide referrals or testimonials from previous customers who were happy with the contractor’s painting in Denver or other Front Range city. Ask if you can have the addresses of homes the company painted recently or if you can contact any customers by phone.
- Will you be provided with a written estimate? The estimate you receive and the contract you sign should clearly define the scope of work the company will be providing, explain each step of the process, and outline any details or special circumstances.
- Will work on your project steadily progress? The contractor should define when exactly crews will be on the site working on your project. Ask whether the crews will stay on the job and work consecutive, full days until the project is complete or work simultaneously painting in Denver or other cities on multiple projects, progressing slowly through yours.
